Municipal Pool Gets Back in the Swim

So what exactly happened to the Metuchen Municipal Pool this season? Rumor ran rampant when the Pool Commission was slow to reveal the causes of the dive area filter malfunction. Will the new management be able to make changes that will assure smooth swimming next year? One thing's for sure--over the next five weeks a new filter is being put into place and serious money is being spent. But is it enough?

Metuchen Municipal Pool is, by their own description, "a publicly run outdoor aquatic facility featuring a large main pool for swimming and diving, and a circular wading pool for toddlers. . . . featur(ing) beautiful, landscaped grounds that are ideal for sunbathing, recreational facilities like volleyball courts and a game room, a pool house with locker rooms and showers, and a fully staffed snack bar and covered dining pavilion." Located on Lake Avenue, the pool offers a safe and clean environment for fun in the sun from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year.

Under new management this year, the pool tried to make do with an ailing filter. Adjustments were made but those efforts only put a band-aid on the problem. The facility was closed down for several hot July days when the Health Inspector declared the water cloudy and not in an attempt to appease angered members, the pool offered a variety of extended services, including opening each day between Labor Day and school from 4PM-8PM. A Family Fun Night with free food and entertainment was cancelled due to hurricane-encouraged bad weather on Saturday, September 6th.

Metuchen Matters wants to know: how did these events affect your family?  And what do you think the town should do to ensure that it doesn't happen again?
