Money might make the world go-round but in Metuchen? It's volunteers. To truly consider the amount of time sacrificed by the 100's of families committed to making good things happen is to experience vertigo.
Sports leagues, scout troops, religious groups, art festivals, philanthropic efforts, fund raisers, parents at school, neighborhood helpers - it's all part of what makes small-town life lovely (and big-town life feel small).
If money makes the world go-round, time is the most valued currency within a busy family. Sure we all want to eat dinner together and have time for board games and after-dinner walks. But we also want our kids to live a fit life, an enriched life, to learn how to see and explore the world around them. Our valuable currency, time, must be spent to make it happen.
Are you a grateful beneficiary of a volunteer's efforts? Do you help or hinder? Are you the type of volunteer whose personal agenda pushes others away? Maybe you've never volunteered? Things to think about...
Metuchen Matters will feature heroes of volunteerism in the months ahead. How do they manage home, work, and volunteerism? What has volunteering added to their lives? What are the greatest challenges and rewards?
Stay tuned for inspiration from their perspiration!
