Thanksgiving Events In and Around Town Offer Fun for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is a great time to gather with family and friends, toast some Pilgrims (with wine, silly!) and eat a lot. However, if all this togetherness becomes too much to take, there are diversions aplenty throughout the Tri-State area. These activities, some traditional, some brand new, will provide lots of fun for all ages and give you a chance to burn off Aunt Milly's pumpkin pie.

MACY'S THANKSGIVING EVE BALLOON BLOW-UP

Each year, the day before Thanksgiving, the giant Macy's balloons come to life to the oohs and ahhhs of children and their parents. It's quite a sight to watch as SpongeBob, Big Bird and Garfield fill up with helium on the streets of Manhattan. Giant nets are used to hold them down. The latest additions include; Hello Kitty, Shrek and Abby Cadabby. The balloons can be veiwed from 77st and 81st Streets, between Central Park west and Columbus Avenue. Do not attempt to drive--you'll never find anywhere to park. Mass transit is recommended!

Children can learn about Thanksgiving traditions, mold cornucopias out of clay and make their own cornhusk dolls from fresh ears of corn. If your tots are craving more traditional art activities, they can decorate place mats with watercolors (or, for the older set, acrylic paints) to honor people they're thankful to know. Visit the website for arts and crafts schedule. All ages. Sat 22, Sun 23, Sat 29, Sun 30 10am-3:45pm. Children's Museum of Manhattan, 212 W 83rd St between Amsterdam Ave and Broadway (212-721-1234, cmom.org). Spade and Archer is the name of a San Francisco detective agency. The
two men are partners, but Spade doesn't like Archer much. Just one
hour after a knockout named Miss Wanderly wanders in everything has
changed. Archer is dead. And so is a man named Floyd Thursby. It seems
Miss Wanderly is surrounded by dangerous men. There's Joel Cairo, who
uses gardenia-scented calling cards. There's Kasper Gutman, with his
enormous girth and feigned civility. Her only hope of protection comes
from Spade, who is suspected by the police of murder. More murders are
yet to come, and it will all be because of these dangerous men...and
their lust for a bird statuette known as the Maltese Falcon. FREE!
