Are NFL players living in fear?

01burress.190.jpgDavid Fleming of ESPN the Magazine thinks so.  In his article "Living Scared" he states, "the culture of the NFL - the wealth, fame, brutality and air of invincibility - makes its players vulnerable."  So what makes them great on the field makes them easy targets.  In a radio interview with Dan Blumberg, Mr. Fleming argues that having, "their salaries are in the newspaper, their work schedules, their travel schedules are in the newspaper and on the internet," combined with their fearlessness and how recognizable they are makes for, "a perfect storm of circumstances."  Last year's murder of Washington Redskin player Sean Taylor and the recent gunpoint mugging of Steve Smith are further evidence that the NFL player can be targets.

Listen to the radio interview:

The NFL does prevent players from carrying guns while they are doing business for the NFL and discourages guns as a method of security.  Even so, Giants owner John Mara does admit he knows "a lot players carry guns.  It's not something we are particularly pleased about, but that's the choice that they make."

What do you think?  Are the players targets?  More so than anybody else?  Do they have the right to protect themselves by carrying guns?

I bet they were designer sweatpants!

What PB did wasn't intentionally stupid, that was just dumb. Stupid would be to try to carry a gun in the front waistband of sweatpants.

The real crime is going out to a club in sweatpants.

That guy who wrote that article is nuts. How can he say PB had no "malign intent"? Is the writer a mindreader? PB certainly was intentionally stupid. Trying to carry a gun in the waistband of sweatpants? Seems like even someone who hasn't taken a firearms safety course would see the stupidity in that. He could have easily shot an innocent person because of his stupidity.

According to this article in the WSJ they do.

Is it true non-residents can't get a permit? Does every armed bodyguard that works in New York live there? Or is it a different type if permit for that line of work?

Ummm, I don't think the average person is familiar with NYC gun law. The news report I heard said he didn't have a permit. Nothing stopping him from hiring a bodyguard who has a NY carry permit.

I wish more players followed the Tony Dungy rule. At every training camp Dungy brings a stack of statistics which basically show that 90% of the crimes involving NFL players happen after midnight. So his rule is GO HOME at midnight, avoid these situations.

"If they want to carry guns they should get a permit."

Ummm, NY doesn't issue carry permits to non residents, so Plax couldn't get one in New York if he tried.

That being said, are they targets? Sure, but I think a bigger issue is quite a few of these players are thugs. They grew up in that environment and some just don't ever really change from that lifestyle.

For all the talk, if Plax were younger, he would end up back playing in the NFL (probably for the Cowboys.) Because of his age, his career is probably over.

I bet they can afford to hire bodyguards. And if they want to carry guns they should get a permit. I stopped following most professional sports a long time ago, after the second baseball strike. Bunch of overpaid crybabies.
