METUCHEN --A teenager home from school was unharmed Monday when an intruder broke through the door and interrupted the boy's 911 call for help, police said.

The teen was home alone at about 11:40 a.m. when the doorbell started to ring repeatedly, Metuchen police officer David Liantonio said. After calling his mother to ask if she was expecting anybody, the juvenile called 911 and hid in the shower.

The teenager, whose age was not immediately known, told police he then heard the sound of wood cracking as the intruder broke through the door and entered the home, Liantonio said. Moments later a 911 dispatcher was able to hear what took place when the intruder discovered the boy in the bathroom.

"They heard the juvenile asking the intruder not to hurt him over the open line and then the phone went dead," Liantonio said, adding that the intruder apparently grabbed the telephone.

The intruder was gone, possibly scared off by the call, and the teenager was found unharmed, when police arrived, he said. Officers searched the area but did not find the intruder.

Police had not found the phone used to call 911 as of about 4 p.m. Nothing else appeared to be missing from the home except for loose change.

The teenager, a high school student, was at home because he was sick, Liantonio said.

According to the police, the suspect was described as a clean shaven black male in his early 20's with a shaved head. He was wearing a navy blue jacket and blue jeans.

The guy broke into the house to steal other items. He was in the master bedroom looking for valuables when he heard the kid on the phone with the police. He took the cordless phone (not a cell phone) from the kid so he could not talk to the police. He then left without taking anything else because he wanted to get out before the police arrived.

I hope this clears things up for you.

This makes no sense... a guy breaks into a house, steals a phone from a kids hand and leaves? really? doesn't take anything else, but bothers to take a phone. was is a cell phone? they should just be able to track it's location if it is....

How come we do not have a description of the intruder? Tall, short, black, white, green, red, American, Asian, Indian..is there something to hide or do people think there is no need to let us know whom we should be on the lookout for?

yea i know the kid he said that the crook just came into the bathroom stole the phone and left.

So the guy stole the phone?

So the kid hid in the shower and then the crook made a clean getaway?

Don't worry, The mayor will have his volunteers assist you. He does not see the need of having a well staffed police force. You are on your own as far as town officials care.

You will always see a decline in the economy followed closely by an incline in crime.

Last night at the Borough Council meeting the Council reiterated that the police in town have asked everyone to make sure that they lock their doors and take whatever precautions they can to avoid situations like this. Lock your cars, lock your doors, be aware of your surroundings. Tis the season for caution.
