Raritan River Protests by Edison Wetlands Association Continue

Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) will hold a sixth public rally to spotlight the ongoing discharge of carcinogenic chemicals and contaminants into the Raritan River from the Akzo Nobel / Basell industrial site on Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 12-12:30 PM in front of the Basell factory, located at 340 Meadow Road in Edison.

EWA previously filed a lawsuit with Eastern Environmental Law Center in January 2008, charging Akzo Nobel Chemicals Inc., Akzo Nobel Inc., and Basell USA Inc. with violating the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).  Sampling by Akzo Nobel's consultant, Sovereign Consulting, found the carcinogens benzene at over 860 times acceptable state levels and arsenic at over 550 times above NJDEP surface water criteria.  EWA's sampling also found high levels of the carcinogens 4-chloroaniline and asbestos, and other contaminants.

Wow! Glad to see somebody is cleaning up contamination along the River. If it takes rallies to get the job done, then so be it. It's also important to note that this group is not just ralling about the pollution, but taking action in Federal Court and sueing the responsible parties. There should be more groups out there who work on these issues; especially in NJ, the most contaminated state.

How are they making it difficult for the people who are trying to clean up the site, when there is no one trying to clean it up?

They're calling attention to an ongoing and active discharge of toxic waste.

Please, you have to be kidding. These guys are shining a light where it needs to be. These guys are making the sites get cleaned up, you think these companies would just do it on there own? Why? Its cheaper for them to not clean up there acts, I guess you think they are going to do it out of the goodness of there hearts?

As for your claim they are just doing it to get a position in gov or glorify themselves, that is complete BS and you know it. Just a good way to slam somebody.

This group is making it very difficult for the people who are trying to cleanup the site to do their jobs. I understand they are concerned about the wetlands and surrounding areas, but they are going about it in the wrong way. Someone is obviously trying to make a name for themselves and search out a position in local government, and not trying to find the best resolution to the problem.

Where's the pic of Bob Spiegel in his Arctic haz-mat suit?

These people are heroes and I fully support their campaign to keep the scene clean. Wen I hit the mega millions these folks are getting a big cheque.
