Bruce Springsteen released his latest album, "Working on a Dream," this past Tuesday to decidedly mixed reviews.   On NPR's Soundcheck music critics Phil Freeman and Lizzy Goodman debated the merits of "Working on a Dream" and Springsteen's legacy.

Is Springsteen still "The Boss"?  Was he great once but has since jumped the shark?  Or has he always been overrated?

Bruce shouldn't be preaching his politics to us when we pay "BIG BUCKS" to hear his music. I used to love to see him in concert but when he started preaching in addition to singing, I decided I would rather spend my hard earned money elsewhere.

"Who cares who Springsteen supports politically?"

Exactly, sure, he has a right to his opinion and a right to voice his support, but it shouldn't influence anyone else.

Who cares who Springsteen supports politically? What is truly annoying is that his "blue collar" audience pay good money to hear his music, (if it ever was that good is debatable - outside of the cultural capital that is our great state!) and we have to listen to his mumbled political opinion.

It's easy to look like a "good person" when you ride around in a limo from concert to mansion and back. I think it's called being a "limousine liberal".

And the person above is right,he shoud not have supported Kerry. He should have supported Nader. Cause you know, Bush was so good the last 4 years.

Wait till you see Dylan in the Pepsi commercial. The guy is my all time favorite, but that is pretty sad. BTW,Bruces last album, Magic,is one of his best.

"rich, vacuous gasbag"? that's a harsh thing to say about a very decent human being. I doubt most people give the same percentage of their income as he does, and I don't see why being a performer voids your right to have political opinions. I wouldn't say he even makes my top five favorites, and I am not always politically aligned with him, but I still have respect for his talent and right to speak his mind... and when he has an opinion, he's willing to put his name behind it.

I like some of his songs but never understood the whole Boss thing and disagree that he defined a generation. Maybe because I've always liked a wide variety of groups and was never over-attached to any particular one. Asbury Park is still not on the map - they have been trying to revive it for over thirty years.

He sucks now -jumped the shark with Kerry's campaign, shut up you rich, vacuous gasbag - no one cares about your political leanings

Metuchen is in New Jersey; The Boss is a New Jersey icon. You sure you want to start up about The Boss?

The man not only created a sound that defines a generation,a time and a place, but he put Asbury Park back on the map! No one has a hit everytime and someone's favorite will always be another's least. But there's no denying that Bruce forged a style and maintained it and did it without flashy commercialism. He maintained the soul not only in his sound but also in his integrity. Not to mention that in his 50's he can still rock on stage for 4 hrs and hold himself up sideways on a mic stand! All while cracking-up and having fun. He'll always be The Boss.

He will always be the Boss!

Shark jumper

Bon Jovi!

The first four albums were truly great (Darkness on the Edge of Town being the best). The River and Nebraska were good in spots (The River, Atlantic City), but were lacking overall. It was downhill from there.

The rest of his career was not bad enough to hurt his legacy though. He's an all-time great.
