The Duchess Diner is Gone--Now What?

1249244-Duchess_Diner-New_Jersey.jpgThe Duchess Diner on Lake Avenue closed last month with a whimper, not a bang. A sign in the window says they were having plumbing problems, but rumor has it the owner experienced some financial hardship that lead to a shut down of their utilities. How can small business owners keep their places running today? These culinary institutions are a staple in the mythology of all things New Jersey. However, with the increase of all sorts of taxes, the rising cost of utilites, food prices going up while the economy is going down, it's hard to believe that any stand-by old-fashioned diners still exist.

Does Metuchen need another diner? Where do you go instead to get your comfort food when a burger and fries is all you need and McDonalds just won't do? And for those of you who frequented it for years, how are you making do without the Duchess?

I still miss the turkey burgers. They were great.

We've been going to Family resturant on Oak Tree Road in Edison. It's good, but closes at 3 PM.Just a thought.

Worst.
Diner.
EVER.

(of course some of that was bc it was pre-2004 and all the bad food was rancid with tobacco smoke as well)

Can I blame Darth O'Brien for everything? Cool. The dark-side ate my homework. When you blame government on every single thing that goes wrong your voice might be ignored and you probably have really good things to say. Sometimes it's just not a good business or not the best business owner at the helm. I guess in this case it was just a nice guy being taken advantage of by some greedy people.

There was a comment a while back about the Duchess after that fire story. I found it and copied it:

Word has it that due to a deal-gone-bad elsewhere, the owner fell onto such financial hardship that the he lost the Duchess too. Seems there was a gentleman’s-agreement with a partner in another diner in another town. A lot of money was invested. That partner died - no contract had been signed - and so his nasty kids came and took over the whole place, leaving the Duchess owner hi and dry. Sad story.

I hope it does return as a diner. Our family stopped going there a few years back due to really poor food quality. However, for a solid 15 years prior to that, we visisted the Duchess at least once a week, sometimes for Sunday breakfast, which was a dynamite value and sometimes for a dinner special during the week. What we don't need is yet another vacant spot, particularly in that area where the former Stop and Shop eyesore sits (how long has that been sitting there despite years of town "meetings" about revitalization?!)

Problem was he ran a shoestring operation. Made cutbacks everywhere, including the food quality. When he stopped paying his bills, he got cut off. Sad truth is The Duchess long pre-dated the current owner and it is a shame he ran a town institution into the ground.

Rumor has it that the ownership is trying to make a comeback. I think all of the "plumbing problems" have been resolved.

When we first moved here, we used to get takeout there all the time. The place was rundown but it was nice having a diner right in the neighborhood. I guess Menlo Park Diner will have to take its place for our town. Is someone looking to buy the Duchess?

I miss their tender and juicy turkey burgers.

The town? Ain't just the town smart guy, over 75 thousand layoffs were announced just yesterday, we are averaging over 500,000 layoffs a month.

And I thought when we cut taxes for all the wealthy folks they were going to let some of the money "trickle down" to us po' folks and get he economy going?

Epic fail!

and what might that be?

this town has no use for its businessess. They have one agenda.
