From Councilman Chris Morrisson:

Flags at Borough Hall are at half mast today, following the death this weekend of  Angelo Donato, Chief of the Auxiliary Police Department and former head dispatcher of the Police Department. A wake will be held at Costello's on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm  & a funeral service will be held at Costello's on Thursday at 10:30 am. Costello's asks that if you are anticipating attending the funeral service that you arrive early.  After the funeral service, those in attendance will be asked to walk down to the Police Department and the hearse will do a final drive by.

A resolution was passed last year by the Borough Council to honor Donato last year. In 2006, he suffered a stroke and legions of grateful friends, family and townspeople supported a fundraiser held by the Metuchen Police Department to help him out.  "You won't find many like Ang," said Capt. Robin Rentenburg, who has known Angelo for almost 20 years. "I have never met anyone as dedicated as Ang. He will literally give you his last penny. I don't think people know a quarter of  what he has done for the police auxiliary and the borough as well."

On Wednesday and Thursday, those who held him in high esteem will have an opportunity to thank and honor him for the last time.

My heartfelt sympathy to Angelo Donato's family. It is rare to find such a good-natured and devoted person nowadays - which he certainly was. His family reflects what a great man he was and he will be greatly missed.

Sincerely, Arline Zatz
