Mid-Summer Pool Report Card: How Does the Municipal Pool Rate?

Although the weather hasn't always been cooperating to the fullest extent of its heat-creating best this season, there has been plenty of rays to catch while enjoying an afternoon at the beach . . . or pool. Speaking of pool, what do you think of the Metuchen Municipal Pool post-sprucing-up? Lost IDs aside and despite the lack of certain members' names on the membership list, some things have changed for the better.

So tell us . . . what happened? Did you join the pool or not? Did you decide to go somewhere else, even though the pool commission swore that this year would be better? For those of you enjoying the pool, would you rate it much higher than you would have last year? The new pump seems to be working just fine, it's fun to swim without pulling your hair out trying to stuff it into some skintight cap and the new umbrellas are like blue-and-white mushrooms sprouting from the green grasses, making a very pretty picture.

Tell us your stories and let's let the Pool Commission know whether or not their changes and maintenance have made a difference in your enjoyment of this community site and if they have indeed paid attention to their members' needs.

I love the pool and agree with the previous poster issues about the ID cards not being checked and the fact that non members are using members ID cards to get it. These people are thieves plain and simple and should be stopped. What is really troubling is that instead of paying $265 or the guest fee they will set a bad example for their kids. I really don't see any difference between this behavior and sneaking into the movies or onto a train. It is stealing. The girls at the front desk are not doing thier job and costing the pool income. The id cards should be handed to the people at the front desk and the pictures checked. If the ID doesn't match up, both parties ( the thief and card's owner) should be banned from the pool.
What is really sad is that I know some of my daughter's classmates parents have talked about pulling this scam. While waiting to pickup our kids the topic of joining the pool came up. Two mothers stated that they were just going to use a friend's ID. Then in the next breath they debated on which luxury SUV they should get. I guess I'm the dummy for paying for the pool while I drive a eight year old minivan.
BTW has the pool received the printer back from NASA yet?

I'm a big fan of the Metuchen Pool. I give it an A. But this year, I forgot to send in my check for the "early bird special," so I decided to just wait for the 2010 season. In the meantime, I'll bring the family to Point Pleasant Beach, or maybe go to Cheesequake State Park where that little lake is a nice change of pace.

The pool is fine. Considering what we pay for a family membership it really is a great value.

I agree with a previous post - PLEASE remove the poison ivy along the fence! Round-Up makes a weed killer specifically for getting rid of poison ivy.

The men's bathroom and family bathrooms are visibly cleaner and the fresh paint helps.

"The bathrooms are the bathrooms with fresh paint, so I only use them for utilitarian purposes."

??

Were you planning on using them for tea parties?

10:34, there's also a new floor surface, new shower heads (although one of the three doesn't work right), new curtains, new hooks, new bench, new mirror, and new shelf in the ladies room. What exactly did you want them to do?

My kids love the pool and the swim lessons this year. To me the kiddy pool is nice, when the older kids aren't in it with their water blasters. I have not seen the water problems at all. The lifeguards are OK, not spectacular, but then seem to be doing their job. The bathrooms are the bathrooms with fresh paint, so I only use them for utilitarian purposes. Overall B, B-.

Overall, the pool, the building and the umbrellas look great. I agree with the comment about the posin ivy against the fence. It really needs to be addressed. Also, while there are plenty of handicap-parking spots, the challenge of those using walkers, canes and other walking devices should be addressed with concreting those parking areas and eliminating all cracks and separations leading into the breezeway. My husband needs to be assisted from the car to the breezeway because he is unable to balance himself and his cane while walking over the stones.

I would give the place a solid C. I like the new mushroom umbrellas.I think the manager is doing a nice job, her assitants are not there enough to tell if they know what is going on. Swim teams are still fun to watch. I love family fun night. Float night rules and the food is outstanding but the last one we went to there were only two lanes open to swim because they closed off a section for Masters swimming? You close two lanes for 6 swimmers? Please get rid of that. Water still becomes cloudy often. my request is to bring back Ken Graf as manager and have Ed Angus and Emily Mertz as his assitants. How about a new kiddie pool?

We're very happy about the no smoking policy and the elimination of the swim cap rule.

My kids are having a great time, just like they did last year. Love the new shelf in the ladies room. Very convenient.

It would be nice if they would do something about the poison ivy along the fence. If your ball or frisbee comes into contact with the fence, you should wash it off.

Also, the shower control in the first ladies shower does not work properly -- it won't stay put. The other two work great, and I like the new curtains with the suction cups.

Now if we could just get mothers with young boys to use the family bathrooms instead of the ladies room...

I would really like to see the membership actually mean something. Cards are never checked. Already numerous people have said how they just bring their guests in and haven't paid for them or they use another member's card since the kids at the front desk don't really care. It's disappointing to see how many dishonest people are in the community but it also means missed revenues for the pool. In the end, those of us that are honest members will end up paying for all of these people as we pay the increasing dues each year. The change needs to come from management. I'm sure it's too pricey, but what about a scanning system like the Y uses?

I did not join the pool this year. With the events of last year, I felt I spent a lot of money for very little time spent at the pool. It just was not worth the money to me.
