Mike Patterson asked area high school arts students to go nuts on the wall in the alleyway next to What's the Scoop and some very talented members of J.P. Stevens arts honor society did just that! In their universe, Da Vinci's Mona Lisa enjoys a large cone and, instead of the apple that masks the ubiquitous bowler-hatted gentleman of Magritte's SON OF MAN, there is instead, yes, another ice cream cone. Check out the very colorful alleyway next time you're on Main Street and see how many of these artistic reinventions you can recognize! The offer is still out to other high schools so let's hope some bright young artists get a chance to go all Basquiat on the grey stone this summer.

The last time I went through, there actually was less glass -- someone must have gone through and cleaned up. Thanks to whomever did it!
Then maybe its time for you too move on if Metuchen is too much like Irvington to you
I pick up broken glass and litter when it's on my own property or in a park. Not gonna do it on someone else's property.
I grew up in Metuchen, and that alley has always looked like that. Except now it has a nice new mural. If you want to clean up the glass, bend over and pick it up yourself if it bothers you that much.
What a great idea!
The mural is great! I commend Mike and all of the student artists for sure...wouldn't it be great to have a few other blank walls around town turned over to various artists...Just a dream...
I grew up in Irvington and that is how alleyways were in Irvington. I DO NOT expect that in Metuchen. If the alleyway is there to be used as a passageway between the public parking out back and Main St., then the alleyway should be kept in somewhat of an acceptable manner. In other words broken glass should be cleaned up, etc....
Broken glass in an alley? Funky smells in an alley?
Heavens no!!! Whats become of our cute little town....
That sounds really nice but the last time I walked through there I found myself dodging broken glass. There was also a funky smell to the alleyway.
I watched the students as they began the wall during JuneBug and saw it again this past weekend. It is terrific! Their interpretation of great paintings with the ice cream theme is alot of fun. I can't wait to see how it evolves.
