Magical Metuchen Moments: 5th grade writers make 2nd grade stars

Hats-off to the great projects some of our teachers have shared with their students.  Mrs. Rena Falk, 5th grade reading teacher at Edgar School, has her class write stories - several chapters long and with illustrations - in which a 2nd grade student is the star.

Working with 2nd grade teacher, Dee Sneddon, the two classes meet early in the school year. Writers and subjects are paired-up and the 5th graders start with some interviewing... "Do you have any pets?  What are your favorite activities?  Who are your best friends?  Where do you like to vacation?..." The answers are incorporated into fabulous tales of fantasy and adventure that the authors work on for many months.  At the end of the school year, the classes meet again and the authors read their stories to the 2nd graders. The older students learn the process of writing and editing in class under the watchful eye of their teacher and the younger students have a lot of fun seeing just how high a 5th grade imagination can fly.
