Four candidates, all of whom have ads and link-thrus you may explore on this site, are running for three available spots in the Board of Elections campaign for 2010, culminating in April 20th's Election Day. Meet the Candidates themselves tonight at Metuchen High School at 7 PM in a panel forum sponsored by the Metuchen Parent-Teacher Council. The event will be aired live on METV as well.

Here is a quick update on the background of the candidates, two incumbents and two newcomers, in alphabetical order--their links are highlighted so that you can access their backgrounds and stands on the issues in their own words:

James. J. Jaques: A research physicist with a young family in Metuchen; President of CQE, Citizens for Quality Education

Jonathan Lifton: Business owner & President of New York Electrical Wholesalers Association, with a young family in Metuchen

Rosemary "Rose de Vries" Schifano:  Proprietor of C.A.P.S. (College Advising for Parents and Students), put two children through Metuchen Public School System; presently on the Board of Education

Well, you had your chance, so here's what I could gather.

Jaques is a Republican

Lifton/de Vries are Dems

Small don't know.

I attended the meeting tonight. The position on full day kindergarten was that there was no way it was going to be in the budget for the next few years, due to the economic climate. It was also mentioned that Metuchen children are not suffering for not having full day kindergarten because the 3rd grade test scores are higher then other districts that have full day kindergarten.

Just my opinion but I thought Rose DeVries and Jonathan Lifton were the best out of the four.

I couldn't make it tonight. However I would like to know where the candidates stand on full day kindergaten. Also I would like to know if it is possible to streamline the board of ed's administration. It seems we have a lot of salary not teaching any courses. Do we really need so many department heads in a small district?

I want to know each candidates current and/or prior political party affiliation before making any voting decisions.

Although these divisions can often be artificial, there is certainly some value in knowing what political philosophies each candidate feels is more in line with their own thinking and worldview.

Can the candidates and/or others with specific info please respond?
