Metuchen Celebrates Recovery - September 28, 2010 -- 7:00 P.M. - Metuchen Boro Hall

Alcohol and substance abuse disorders affect 1 in 10 Americans1. The effects of addiction are far reaching, the ripples spread through families, friends and the community at large. The Borough of Metuchen is holding its second annual "Celebrate Recovery Event" providing an opportunity for community members to learn about addictions and be introduced to recovery resources and information. The event, sponsored by the Metuchen Municipal Alliance, features a panel of speakers including representatives from the Recovering Community, Law Enforcement, a Treatment provider, family Support groups, and the School District. Included are speakers from all walks of life, spanning 5 decades, the youngest speaker age 13 and the oldest in his early 60's. An open question and answer period will follow the speakers.

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (http:// ) The observation of Recovery month began 22 years ago to help educate the public and reduce the stigma associated with addiction and treatment. The objective is to disseminate knowledge and to help people understand the importance of supporting treatment programs, those who work within the treatment field, and those in need of treatment.

With 13.7% of teens ages 12- 17 nationally reporting being approached by someone selling drugs in the past 30 days2 the event allows parents the opportunity to attend the event with their teens and provides a unique opportunity for open and honest dialogue during and after the event.

Despite myths, Addiction is a family disease, according to NOCOA (National Association of Children of Alcoholics). Twenty percent of Children nationally grow up in a household affected by alcoholism. There is no silver bullet but help is available and recovery is possible. The Recovery Month Celebration is a part of the ongoing outreach and education that the Metuchen Municipal Alliance provides to the community.
