The Cultural Arts Commission and the Westerhoff School of Music & Art are sponsoring a trip to the Magic Gardens in Philadelphia on Sunday, May 22. The bus will leave from Metuchen Borough Hall parking lot at 9:00 A.M. sharp.  It will depart from Philadelphia at around 4:00 P.M and arrive back in Metuchen at 5:30 P.M.  The cost of the trip is $35 per person, which includes everything but lunch.

The trip will include a guided tour of this unique urban mural project, which occupies several city blocks and is still growing.   There will also be a hands-on tile-making workshop for each participant, a guided tour and a question/answer session with the artist who created it.Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is a folk environment, gallery space, and nonprofit organization that showcases the work of mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar.

Zagar has devoted himself to beautifying the South Street neighborhood since the late 1960's, when he moved in with his wife, Julia. He was involved in the revitalization of the community by purchasing and renovating derelict buildings, often adding his colorful mosaics to both private and public walls.  By making art accessible, the Magic Gardens seeks to foster civic engagement, community beautification and artistic collaboration.

The tour, hands-on section, and time spent with the artist will take about two hours.   This will leave plenty of time to roam around Philadelphia on your own and experience the restaurants and rich cultural life that this vibrant city has to offer.   We will provide a list of restaurants for your convenience. To reserve a seat on the bus for the May 22 buss trip to Philadelphia's Magic Gardens call Metuchen Recreation Director Nancy Goldberg at (732) 632-8502.#
