For Families with Food Allergy Issues--Expert to Appear at Old Franklin School

Meet Karen Leister, head nurse for the Chatham School District, who was honored by FAAN in 2009 for the programs put into place to help children deal with their severe allergies.

The Allergy & Asthma Support Group of Central Jersey will host the meeting at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 11, at the Old Franklin Schoolhouse, Metuchen. Reservations are required by contacting ainserro@gmail.com

One of the measures introduced by Leister and school psychologist Elizabeth Gaynor is the FAST Friends group, which stands for Food Allergy Support Team, for elementary school students with life threatening allergies at the Southern Boulevard School in Chatham. The group meets several times a year to learn more about the nature of their allergies and about living safely. The group was launched by a grant from the Chatham Education Foundation.

Food Allergy Awareness Week (FAAW) is May 8-11, 2011. For more ideas about how to mark FAAW, see http://www.foodallergy.org/section/food-allergy-awareness-week11.
