Lakeview Students Learn from Edgar Eighth Graders

From Edgar School:

An "exchange of lessons" occurred recently between The Lakeview School of Edison and Edgar Middle School in Metuchen. Eighth grade students from Ed Ronk's Science classes at Edgar assisted the Lakeview students with a hands-on lab activity investigating Heat and Thermal Energy.

Campbell Elementary, Edgar Middle and Metuchen High have all been interacting with the Lakeview School for many years; this being the eighth year of collaboration between Edgar Middle School and Lakeview. The Lakeview School is located in Roosevelt Park and provides education and medical support to children with a wide variety of developmental disabilities.

Edgar students prepared for the event by learning about the various medical conditions, causes, prognosis, physical and cognitive limitations from a biological and medical perspective.  Judi Alfano, Supervisor of Curriculum and Testing at Lakeview also provided a presentation to the Metuchen students describing the challenges and abilities with mobility, communication and social interaction.  Edgar students were then taught the science lesson which they, in turn, taught to the Lakeview students.

Previous year's lessons ranged from velocity and acceleration to solar power to chemical reactions. In each case, the science was secondary to the real learning, which was what the students learned from their interaction with each other.
