The Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County, in partnership with New Jersey Yachad, will present a Special Needs Parent Conference & Family Day on Sunday, March 25, from 9:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. at East Brunswick Jewish Center. The Conference is a day of informative workshops, networking opportunities and programs for Jewish children with special needs and their parents and siblings. The goal is to connect these children and their families to available community resources that they may not know exist.

The day's keynote presenter is Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman, National Director of Yachad, The National Jewish Council for Disabilities (NJCD), Dean of IVDU Schools, and Director of the NJ Association of Jewish Day Schools.  Dr. Lichtman will address the issue of inclusion of individuals with special needs into the Jewish community.

Workshops for parents will include topics on providing a Jewish education for children who do not attend Jewish day schools, inclusive summer camp opportunities, understanding medications, planning for young adults after high school (post-21), and much more. Children's programming will be available during the event, including programs for kids with special needs and their siblings.

"Assisting special needs children and their families is rooted in our mission to care for the vulnerable here and around the world," said Arlene Frumkin, president  of the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County. "We are pleased to partner with New Jersey Yachad to bring such a valuable program to our local Jewish community. This event will generate excitement and most importantly bring people together and help create an inclusive community."

"There are 1000 special needs Jewish children in our community," said Lee Livingston, the Federation's immediate past president and member of the event committee. "This conference is 'step one' in reaching out to the parents and determining what our community can do to truly be a community of inclusion."

Cost for the program is $25 per person, or $36 for the entire family and includes a buffet lunch. Registration is required by contacting Chani Herrmann at herrmann@ou.org or 917-885-7178.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County brings together people, partners and resources to fulfill the most important needs and aspirations of our community. They care for the vulnerable locally and worldwide, forge strong connections with Israel, attract people to a more vibrant community, and inspire the next generation to embrace Jewish life.
