From the Superintendent's Office:

For two weeks, five mathematics and special education teachers from the Metuchen School District are participating in Year 3 of the Mid-Jersey Math Science Partnership Institute at Middlesex County College. Participants include Campbell School teacher Michele Bethe, Edgar Middle School teachers Jeanne Hughes, Laura McCadden, Lindsay McKenna, and Sandy Vorensky and Metuchen High School teacher Sherry Lifson. The purpose of the Institute is to provide teachers with enriching activities and the opportunity to collaborate and articulate on topics related to the new Common Core Standards recently adopted by the State of New Jersey in order to increase student achievement. Professors in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) will provide the instruction and guidance for the Year 3 topics: Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

Other school districts participating in the institute include Carteret, Clifton, Diocese of Metuchen, East Brunswick, North Brunswick, Old Bridge, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, Spotswood, West Milford, Woodbridge. At the conclusion of the two weeks of workshops, the teachers will be making a presentation on a vertically aligned concept and how it can be expanded within each grade level 5-10.

As participants in the partnership, the teachers will receive complementary classroom materials (manipulatives, technology software, etc.), in addition to a stipend provided in accordance with the grant from the New Jersey Department of Education. As an added bonus to the 70 hours of work from July 30th to August 10th, the teachers will be participating in additional 30 hours of professional development workshops associated with the grant throughout the 2012-2013 school year in order to further collaborate both within and outside the district. Google groups will be utilized to help all participating teachers organize and share materials. Click here for their website:
