From Metuchen Recreation:

Metuchen celebrates the coming of fall with its annual Jazz Fest on Saturday, September 22nd,  3:00  to 5:00 p.m. at the Metuchen Borough Hall Plaza on the corner of Main Street and Middlesex Avenue (Route 27) in Metuchen.

The free, outdoor concert will feature the Mike Kaplan Nonet and the  Richard Reiter Swing Band. The  Metuchen Jazz Fest starts at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 22nd.  The plaza in front of Metuchen's Borough Hall on the corner of Main Street and Middlesex Avenue provides a lovely, intimate, outdoor venue to showcase these talented New Jersey musicians.  The public is invited to bring lawn chairs or simply relax on the bench seating that rings the plaza.  In case of rain, the program will move indoors to the Metuchen Senior Center on the corner of New and Center Streets.

This free concert is sponsored by the Metuchen Arts Council and is funded in part by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Middlesex County Cultural & Heritage Commission with assistance through a grant provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. For more information, please call Nancy Goldberg, Metuchen Recreation Director at 732-632-8502.

The Mike Kaplan Nonet combines the strength of a big band with the spontaneity of a small group.  The group plays original arrangements and re-examines compositions of other Jazz greats from Duke Ellington to Herbie Nichols to George Adams.  The Nonet features Mike Kaplan (tenor sax), Bill Mobley (trumpet/flugelhorn), Rob Henke (trumpet/flugelhorn), Pete McGuinness (trombone), Ben Williams (trombone), Anton Denner (alto sax/clarinet/flute), Ed Xiques' (baritone  and soprano sax/flute), Matt King (piano), Doug Weiss (bass), and Pete MacDonald (drums).

The Richard Reiter Swing Band, one of New Jersey's most popular swing combos, performs swing era favorites and lots more.   Dancing is definitely an option when they get going.  The group features Reiter on saxophone, clarinet and flute, plus vocalist Tricia Slafta, accompanied by Regan Ryzuk (keyboard), Bob Funesti (bass) and Matt Patuto (drums).
