Childrens Room Is Open at LIbrary - Open House On Friday June 28

The Metuchen Public Library is delighted to announce that the Children's Room will officially reopen to patrons today Monday, June 24, and will host an open house during the June Bug ArtFest on Friday, June 28.

The Children's Room has been closed since April 2, 2013 while undergoing greatly needed repairs and improvements. Thanks to careful oversight from the Library Board of Trustees, Phase One of the work was completed on schedule and within budget.  The structural work, essential to the safety and function of the room, included electrical upgrades, repairs to the ceiling and walls, replacement of two radiator covers, and replacement of all the broken and inadequate shelving in the Children's Room.  The walls and ceiling have been painted, new lights and fans have been installed, carpet has been replaced, and outlets have been upgraded and relocated.  Earlier this year the exterior window sashes were painted. Window cleaners are scheduled to wash both the exterior and interior panes to put the final polish on these distinctive and beautiful architectural elements of the original library building.

Library maintenance and improvement are ongoing and every effort is made to perform this work when least disruptive to patrons. "We were very happy that we were successful in completing so much of the work in the Children's Room before the start of the library's summer programming.  The Children's Room will host its usual summer activities for young children and the Meeting Room is available again for community events and programs," said Linda Koskoski, Secretary of the Library Board of Trustees, who served as a project leader during this phase of the renovations.

Ms. Koskoski continued, "The new shelving and adjustments to the layout of the collection will make it easier for our librarians to help young patrons use the library materials.  These Phase One renovations have improved the safety of the room, increased accessibility to the collection, and have greatly enhanced the beauty of this landmark building."

Elizabeth Waldron, President of the Library Board of Trustees, has been working with the library for several years to plan and budget these critical improvements. "We have more work ahead of us as we look to replace seating and furniture in the Children's Room and we are looking forward to extending the improvements into the upstairs Meeting Room.  With the support of the Friends of the Library and our generous community, we hope to be able to expand the scope of our renovations beyond just the necessary improvements and to bring in some elements that will really beautify these spaces."

The Friends of the Library will launch a fund raising campaign this summer to help fund the next phase of upgrades in the Children's Room and Meeting Room.
