BeerFest '13 Hosted by BIL and Hailey's

"Bring your friends." That's the tagline for this year's first-ever BeerFest '13, a local craft brew festival being held at the Old Franklin Schoolhouse in Metuchen on October 19, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Hosted by the Borough Improvement League (BIL) in partnership with Hailey's Harp and Pub general manager, Moshe Atzbi, BeerFest '13 unites seasonal brew flavors and local cuisine with a communitywide party. It will also feature exhibits from local artists, an indoor/outdoor stage for professional music acts, food for sale from Metuchen eateries, and beer from local craft brewers. Event guests will receive an official BeerFest '13 5-ounce mug to taste unlimited samples of over 20 different beers.

NJ ABC Permit #14001791 ßmust print this for legal reasons.

"This is a great way to show support for the borough," Tyreen Reuter, the BIL president, said. "The more people come out to this event, the better chance we have of throwing a BeerFest in 2014 on a much larger scale. It has the possibility to be a great revenue generator for the borough--but, most importantly, it's a really fun way to unite our community."

On September 21st, a new show opens at the Transformations Gallery - "Catching Up" -- running through November 16, 2013.  The artists will be present at a reception will be held from 7:00 through 9:00 pm at the opening.  "Catching Up" is the story, in art, of two Jersey girls returning to their roots, and sharing their passion for color and light, capturing nature and beauty, weaving it into the lines and threads of their lives, after having been out of touch with each other for a long time.

There will also be an artist talk and workshop that is open to the public on Sunday, September 22, from 12:00 noon through 2:00 pm at the gallery. The artists will discuss their work in the exhibition. The workshop is entitled "Learn to Transfer" in which they will teach participants how to transfer their favorite images from one surface to another. The artists noted that these are simple techniques that are great for collage, journaling, or mixed media work. All materials will be supplied, however participants are encouraged to bring their own magazines or ink jet prints to transfer. The workshop is free and open to public; no experience is necessary. Anyone interested in attending the workshop should email NanciHersh@gmail.com.

Nelson Li, Manager of the Metuchen Farmers Market, had the opportunity to run down the events of the season -- a recent article for the  Chamber of Commerce newsletter is quoted here.

"The Metuchen Farmers Market is once again bringing delicious Jersey-fresh produce and a wide range of tantalizing edibles to our town. Now in its third year of rejuvenation, the all-volunteer Market Committee has grown this attraction from two farmers plus a few other vendors to a major Saturday happening with seventeen vendors, including four farmers." Nelson went on to list the dizzying array of vendors that have come in since last year, including  Knead Bakery, Passion Fruits Artisanal Ice Pops, 2 Chicks with Chocolate and Neil's Sharpening Services.

Metuchen Yarn Bomber Revealed!

yarnbombingpix.jpg

For the many of you readers who have been wondering aloud who the Metuchen Yarn Bomber, MM has gotten the scoop for you. In her own words, here is some background on Jennifer Daro, longtime Metuchenite and Arts Enthusiast:

I graduated from Metuchen High School--my grandparents settled here and my family is the fourth generation to live here. I started knitting around 1991 -- I taught myself the basics. I never took any classes. I usually give [my] finished pieces away to those who appreciate them. I find it very meditative after a long day of work.

I discovered yarn bombing only a few years ago [through] the Internet. Art has always been a love of mine. I have a BFA (Visual Communications with a concentration in graphic design) and an MA (Behavioral Sciences with a concentration in Human Behavior and Organizational Psychology) from Kean University.
So art was and still is a passion for me. The creative bug in me is being expressed via fiber art.

I didn't expect the reaction I received with the yarn bombing.
It is very exciting that everyone seems to enjoy it. I do want to eventually yarn bomb all the trees from Hailey's Pub to 27 on
one side. I have done two trees so far and I am working on the third. The next tree to get bombed will be the one in front of Hailey's Pub.
