Metuchen Farmers Market Manager Catches Community Up On Summer Season

Nelson Li, Manager of the Metuchen Farmers Market, had the opportunity to run down the events of the season -- a recent article for the  Chamber of Commerce newsletter is quoted here.

"The Metuchen Farmers Market is once again bringing delicious Jersey-fresh produce and a wide range of tantalizing edibles to our town. Now in its third year of rejuvenation, the all-volunteer Market Committee has grown this attraction from two farmers plus a few other vendors to a major Saturday happening with seventeen vendors, including four farmers." Nelson went on to list the dizzying array of vendors that have come in since last year, including  Knead Bakery, Passion Fruits Artisanal Ice Pops, 2 Chicks with Chocolate and Neil's Sharpening Services.

After lauding the peppy and committed volunteers who make the Market hum so efficiently every Saturday morning (and behind the scenes all week long), he specified some of the interactions between the community-at-large and the Market.

"The market is also proud of its ever-increasing interconnections with the Metuchen community, starting with the First Presbyterian Church's Food Pantry receiving weekly donations of produce from Country Stand Farm, and Camp Kiddie Keep Well enjoying the same arrangement with Von Thun's Farm. This year on various market days, we've welcomed community groups including Bike|Walk Metuchen, Metuchen EMS, Metuchen Garden Club, First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, Family Friends, Borough Improvement League, Metuchen/Edison Historical Society and Galleries of Metuchen. We even hosted a season-opening event featuring farmer Helen Chandler of Whistling Wolf, renowned chocolatier Diane Pinder and author/critic/professor Teresa Politano," he enumerated.  "We're thrilled that the market is a community event at so many levels."

Li admitted that there may be a shakeup next year if the parking lot development begins. But wherever the Market ends up unflapping its awnings, there will surely be a cornucopia of good products and services made available to Metuchen throughout the growing season.
