FREE Summer Programs at the LIbrary for Young Adults

On Saturday, June 7, 2014, Young Adults can sign up for FREE summer programs at the Metuchen Public Library.  Of particular interest to the high school student would be the Library'sBook Friends Program where teenagers mentor 1st and 2nd graders who are learning to read. The program is scheduled for Friday mornings. High School students earn community service credit for their time.  There is an application to fill out for this program and a training session. The program includes varied activities in a supervised setting.  Find the application atwww.metuchenlibraryteens.org by clicking on "Community Service" and reading about Book Friends.  (Fridays July 11, 18, 25 and August 1; 10:30 AM -12:15 PM)

Do you have summer reading to do? Then join the Library's Summer Book Club for high school students when they read September Girls (and it's definitely a book for guys too!) by Bennett Madison. The fantasy takes place over one summer when 17 year old Sam, along with his father and brother, are abandoned by his mom, and spend time together at the beach. Called "a contemplation of manhood," the book was a 2014 finalist for the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America's prestigious Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Literature. The book club meets two Thursday evenings in July. A free copy of the novel will be given to each participant at the first meeting. (Thursday July 10 and July 24; 7:30 -8:30 PM)

Also of interest: Printmaking led by instructors from the NJ Printmaking Center who will teach the history, art and technique of monoprinting in a hands-on workshop. (Tuesday July 15; 1:00 -3:00 PM)

Please see the brochure of programs which includes dates and times atwww.metuchenlibraryteens.org. Click on "Summer 2014" where you will find other events for high school students like programs that feature STEM and a free practice SAT test.
Early registration is in-person only from 10 AM until 1 PM at the Metuchen Library, 480 Middlesex Avenue.  After 1 PM you may call on 732.632.8526 or write the YA Librarian Katherine Liss atKLiss@Lmxac.org.  No email registration can be accepted before 1 PM, when regular registration begins.  Sign up early; programs have limited space.

Also please note: This summer, the Metuchen Public Library's Children's Room is in need of volunteers to shelve books!  If you can commit to as few as two hours a week, we would love to have you!  We will have two information sessions.  One will be on Saturday, June 7th at 11:00 AM, the other on Monday, June 9th at 3:00 PM.  If you can't make these sessions, please call and together we will make other arrangements. Registration for the information sessions is suggested, but not required.  For more information, please call Miss Glynis in the Children's Room on 732-632-8532.  You may also email her at brookens@lmxac.org. You will receive community service credit for your time. Thank you in advance for your help!
