On Thursday June 26 at 7 pm, the Young Adult and Children's Departments of the Metuchen Public Library (480 Middlesex Avenue) will kick off their summer events with A Visit with Polly Shulman.  Ms. Shulman is the highly acclaimed author of The New York Circulating Repository fantasy series for middle school students (grades 4 and up), which includes The Grimm Legacy and The Wells Bequest. Both novels are part of a planned trilogy and can be read independently, with The Poe Annex due out later this year.  In addition Ms. Shulman has written the award-winning novel Enthusiasm for high school students, a comic romance that has "the makings of an instant classic," according to Time Magazine.

Polly Shulman is an alumna of Hunter College High School (NYC) and Yale University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.  She has written about edible jellyfish, Egyptian tombs, infinity, blind dates, books, brains, centenarians, and cinematic versions of Jane Austen novels.  Her interests are as eclectic as the subjects of her works and are reflected in her collections of outdated technology, 19th century spoons, and antique jewelry.

Since 2008 the Friends of the Metuchen Library has sponsored over a dozen authors, poets and graphic novelists of literary merit for the Library's YA Author Series.  This year the treasurer of the Friends, Alisa Schleif, won a grant from Constellation Energy, an Excelon Company, to bring Ms. Shulman to the Library.  According to Schleif, the Friends are happy to support the Author Series because "meeting an author strengthens a young person's relationship with literature."  YA Librarian Katherine Liss sees Ms. Shulman's visit as a not-to-be-missed opportunity for the middle school or high school student. Liss added: "And author visits often inspire a transformational moment for many children and teens, when they first begin to think of themselves not only as readers but as writers too."

A Visit with Polly Shulman is free and open to the public.  It is a family event and all ages are welcome.  The evening will include a lively presentation, followed by a Q & A session with the audience. Afterwards, refreshments will be served.  Ms. Shulman's novels will be available for purchase, for those who may be interested in buying books and having them signed by the author.
