BOARD OF EDUCATION TO PICK DEVRIES' REPLACEMENT TONIGHT

The Board of Education is hearing from the supposedly six candidates who have expressed interest in the seat left vacant by long-standing Board member Rose DeVries after many years of dedicated service. A notice was issued asking interested candidates to present materials to the Board and tonight those candidates will have an opportunity to speak for three minutes in front of the board as they seek to serve in that vacated spot.

Joann Sabatino-Falkenstein lost out to Justin Manley for the seat during the actual election for open seats on the board in November by only six votes after absentee votes were counted numerous times. She is the only candidate to put her hat in the ring who actually ran a campaign during the original campaign season in the fall.

However, Board President Jonathan Lifton reiterated to an audience at the last Board meeting that this is the procedure for putting someone  into a seat that is left open before the term of that position is completed. Metuchen Matters has not been able to find that actual written process anywhere.

If you have an opinion about the Board choosing DeVries' replacement in this manner, call or write to the Board today before their vote this evening or attend the meeting, which begins at 8 PM at the Metuchen High School in the cafeteria. The candidates will not speak until the end of the meeting.
